February,17,2010:450 cubic meters of oil spilt on the ESPO oil pipeline in Lensky region |
|
The first big oil spill on ESPO oil pipeline happened in the Lensky region on January, 18th, 2010.
But federal, republican and nongovernmental organizations of Yakutia were only informed of that accident on January, 20th, 2010. From coalition of ecologists we sent letters to various controlling and survey institutions and received some information from them regarding the cause of oil spill, the measures taken and the cost of damage to environment. When have all the answers come, we will publish the information here.
Together with our colleagues and partners we sent open petition letters to the presidents of Russia, Yakutia and Transneft company asking them to organize independent inter-structural commission analyzing the cause of oil spill and the actions taken by the officials.
We also gave couples of interviews for TV and newspapers and yesterday, on February 16th, we took part in the session of the republican parliamentary meeting on ecological issues of ESPO oil pipeline where the deputies agreed on our suggestion to organize independent controlling commission and include public ecologists. It was also agreed that with this sad accident it is needed to continue the work on outlining the law of oil spill in the republic. As for other measures for ecological safety of the oil pipeline the exploiting company Vostoknefteprovod announced that they will build the reserve crossings of the Lena river by 2013, staring in 2011. However, the method of crossing is still under consideration on the projecting institution. |
